Best Launch Time LJ?

Hi guys,

What is the general consensus best time to launch for yellow tail out of La Jolla?

Thanks in advance!

Ask Siri for the current sunrise time, and you can usually launch about 30 minutes before that. aka First Light.

If you are around traffic (particularly coming out of the bays), use a light of some sort that's visible in all directions so you don't get run over.

I hang an LED camp light off the gaff point spring protector in my back pole holder. Costco has 3-packs for about $12.

Check your latest tide charts to see what the beach and open water conditions are gonna be like. Although launching before or at daybreak is customary you might wanna see if you really wanna break through 4-5ft+ shore breakers (if conditions are like that at that time of the day, sometimes the shore is pretty calm too). It all depends when you want to go out either weekday or weekend, just do your tide chart homework just to avoid a waste of gas, time, gear loss and your safety. Two weekends ago shore breaks at 6:50am were that high ‘5ft’ then mid last week and this past weekend things have chilled (0.5ft), so launch wisely.
As for yellowtail, last year I got the opportunity to have some boat time on the “Seaforth SAN DIEGO” doing day trips to the Coronado Islands twice. Our time of arrival was anywhere from 8:50am and 10am, after that point once people started throwing live bait or throwing iron, bites started coming in throughout the day. So, there’s no exact time when there’s a better probability to catch something, just that the conditions have to be right. Weather forecast, ‘water temp/ conditions’, time of year, bait/ lures. Check out other sites like ‘SD Fish’ and ‘Bloodydecks’ to get an idea of how boaters are doing and that will help you get a good piece of mind.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I will have to make a trip and nab one of these.

Thanks for the info guys. Considering going out this weekend if my other plans fall through.

Another relevant point: launching at first light is usually the easiest time to consistently catch bait on the way to our first target fishing area.
