10/17 DP yellowtail

I launched from the boat ramp at 6:30, I pay the extra $10 to use the head and shorten my paddle. I heard the bait barge had good sardines, but planned to make mackerel as well. With all the boats launching to fish offshore I was contemplating skipping the line, but it was only 3 boats ahead of me. Got a killer yak scoop of feisty dines and headed north out of the harbor. Slight offshore breeze made for an easy paddle out in the new Jackson Kayak Kraken.

I had easily rigged up a livewell, but no fish finder. This had me scanning the surface more and I started baby sitting the big bait balls that rolled through. I got ripped a few times on the fly line and finally landed a boney. Finally sardine was picked up and running hard, popped it in gear and felt like a yellow right from the start. As I am fighting this fish my dropper loop goes off and I pop it into gear and whatever it was pops off. Stoked at color to see my first Orange County YT circling below. He spooked at the boat and ran down a bit, but not much fight left back up for the gaff and in the boat. Stoked! I hung around hoping for another shot, but only a few more bonito rips on the flyline and scuffed a nd scraped dropper loop. Happy paddle in, been wanting a yellowtail up here for a long time, but have honestly never targeted them specifically until now. Viva El Nino! Not a monster, but plenty of room for an upgrade!

Nice shots Andy!! Love the matching kayak fish colors.

Iceman 10-18-2014 08:07 AM

The color is called Sexy Shad..........I think Sexy Jurel works!:D

I thought that water looked familiar.

Well Andy. There you have it.
Nice job on getting out there
and landing a beauty.

Congrats on your northern forky Andy.

Nice catch Andy. You (and Zed) inspired me to spend 5 hours in that area today with sardines and I only caught bonita on the flyline and some fat bass near the bottom. Do you add any weight to your flyline? I added a 1oz slider so it stayed down a bit as I trolled around. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, or just unlucky! I might go back out tomorrow. Good job!

Nice one Andy!

Nice man. You are motivating me to get out on the water.

Iceman 10-19-2014 07:12 AM

Alan, no weight on the line, #2 live bait hook and 30# line. Changed out my bait every 15 minutes or so if it did not get ripped sooner, to keep a feisty one out there.

Nice fish Andy! Great motivation to give DP a try.

#2 or 2/0? #2 seems too small for the dines. I've been using a 1/0. Thanks for the info!

people are always questioning my hook selection, surprised at how small I match my baits with, #2 worked :D

Great job on the oc yellow, Iceman.

And momo_fish is right, that kayak matches the fish exactly.
