Channel islands............man it was rough out there.

Fishing was slow without any exotics and even slow for rockfish and bass. We caught enough for plenty of ceviche, fish tacos and Yani's spicy seafood stew. Really fun 3 days camping and fishing with Steve, Yani, Thi and Kurt.

If you can name the song, I will really be impressed.

wiredantz 10-30-2013 02:15 PM

that why you didn't find the rockfish:D

jruiz 10-30-2013 02:16 PM

Sounds like Adele, great choice:D

Who cares if you didn't catch much rock fish that's not the main point!! Looks like you guys had a GREAT time just hanging out with each other.

Looks like Yani took care of the cooking...good job Yani!!

What a beautiful island!!!

Super fun trip. Thanks to Andy for the idea & organization, and to the rest of the guys for a fun weekend. Definitely need to do it again.

Here are my pictures in the order they happened. I’ll try to write up a detailed report later.

The Boat

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps64952d77.jpg

The Crew- I feel like this pic could have its own soundtrack.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps3605198b.jpg

We saw a pod of whales on the ride over to the island

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps0ab5e143.jpg

Offloading the gear at the island. Rangers were there to greet and mock us for the ridiculous amount of gear.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse4d62560.jpg

The campsite was about a 10 min walk from the pier. Perfect distance.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psf8386449.jpg

Weather was pretty nasty when we lanched on Sunday. We found a protected cove where we fished until sundown. You can see the whitecaps behind Andy in this pic. The paddle in was “interesting” to say the least!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps2d587c2a.jpg

Fishing wasn’t wide open, but we caught enough for dinner each night.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps8cb8658f.jpg

That particular fish was made into ceviche by the ceviche fairy.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps023d9931.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps6f59ea64.jpg

Or he might have been a taco. I’m not sure.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps885bd19e.jpg

Kurt hard at work

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse0338743.jpg

The campsite

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps093f5f5e.jpg

Fishing Monday morning. The weather was a little better, but the fishing was slower. That is scorpion rock in the background.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps2e0e3f7a.jpg

A familiar sight and smell to a lot of people.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps631a50ed.jpg

The good thing about the fishing being slow, was that I actually slowed down and explored the island a bit.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps3b1e2f74.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse9c190d3.jpg

We had planned fish for dinner. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I’ve never been so happy to find a school of dabs in my life…

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps445f48b0.jpg

Monday noon time. I took a nap on the rocks while waiting for the others to land. The sea had glassed off nicely.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps1f4d5f6e.jpg

Thi just landed

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps93454f4a.jpg

Yani battling the surf

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse45ce365.jpg

What does the fox say? Now I know. They were pretty cool, and everywhere! Pretty acclimated to people too.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps7c2bbb1b.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps80a357b0.jpg

That afternoon we took a hike. We ended up at a pretty cool lookout. Santa Cruz is big. All the land you see here is the island.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps4861d6a2.jpg

We were able to hike right to the cliff edge. Pretty crazy stuff.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps4859c826.jpg

The top was a cool place to contemplate life, collect rocks, and just take the view in. That is Anacapa Island in the distance.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psb4e5deb0.jpg

On the hike back we saw lots of cool caves, which we would explore via kayak the next day.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps4f54f9f3.jpg

The walk back to camp. Pictures can be deceiving. That is probably a 100 ft cliff they are walking on.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps13dd5359.jpg

Thi and Kurt

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psc9331699.jpg

Some nature shots

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps95d5893c.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps68f167fe.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps5642ceda.jpg

Scorpion Harbor

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse2850bec.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psbe397e1c.jpg

Knuckleheads

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps530e5750.jpg

Got back to camp and the foxes were still active

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps073e41b5.jpg

Dinner that night was Yani’s insane fish soup. Dining with Yani, while he cooks is an experience that I feel lucky to have been able to enjoy. The pre dinner entertainment is just as good as the meal.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps6ed0f68d.jpg

The next morning the weather was good, and we decided to paddle to Potato Harbor to fish.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse1782832.jpg

I thought this rock looked like a skull

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps2ab0c964.jpg

Repaying the favor

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psb431a442.jpg

Caught a couple fish on the swim baits

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse8c93cbe.jpg

The water at Potato harbor was crystal clear. This is about 15 feet deep.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psbbadc2a0.jpg

We took our time on the paddle back. Stopping to take in the cliffs, the caves, and the island.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps6e956892.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...pse0b25dd0.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psa1fb57fa.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps7e7a0263.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps0acb90f5.jpg

My camera battery died right before we got into the caves. Hopefully others got some good pics. I was able to eek out 1 more pic as we were departing the island that afternoon.

Cool pics, looks like something I'll be doing in the future

Salty Dog 10-31-2013 08:33 AM

Sand dabs and white fish! I've never eaten so good on a camping trip. I think I gained like 10 lbs!

Great shots, guys!

Got any footage of that typhoon we were paddling in?

dadd827 10-31-2013 11:10 AM

Man... I sure don't feel like sitting at work after seeing those pics! Looks like it was a great time.
