MLPA - Time to get to work! ROLL CALL

Ok friends, you know what's at stake. We have through Nov 10 to make our case for La Jolla.

There's a small strike team working in the background, but like it has been since day 1, this requires a community effort. I'm calling on EVERYONE on this board to write a letter in support of the proposal 2 maps for San Diego. These can and should go to your local political leaders, fishing and yacht clubs and the like, then funneled to the Blue Ribbon Task Force. YOU CAN DO THIS BY SENDING A COPY TO ME

Keep this in mind. It won't do us much good to hang onto the northwest corner if the whole world is in there with us. Right now we're still dealing with the danger of bookends, only this time they aren't on either side of Mission Bay, they flank LJ.

We need to hold the existing Scripps Reserve in its current boundaries and push back on an expanded bait-only SMCA around the pier. Just think about how treacherous north La Jolla will be once free divers, kayak anglers, private boaters, the commercial guys and sportboats are all crammed into that postage stamp. At the very least we need that outlet to the north. That's our nightmare worst case scenario. Get on it!

PM me for talking points and to discuss possible letter targets.

Give me a roll call! I'm not kidding around.

La Jolla Talking Points - We've mentioned these in public testimony, so there's nothing secret about it. For general support, DON'T FENCE ME IN!

General letter targets will be announced shortly.

1. Support Prop 2 for San Diego, where it meets all science guidelines and lessens economic impact. Captures the rare deep water rock and pinnacles at Del Mar. Other proposals fall short of SAT guidelines because they do not.

2. If the task force closes south La Jolla, enlarges the existing reserve and grows the SMCA proposed for the pier all the way up to Torrey Pines (BOOKENDS), there will be many negative impacts:

- Compaction will cause a threat to public safety. We'll have to share a tiny area with sportboats, private boats, commercial boats, free divers and kayakers. People will get hurt, most likely a free diver or kayaker.

- Small changes make big differences for kayak anglers. The paddle out from the Shores would go from 1/2 a mile to roughly 2/3 and take out roughly 20% of the east-west extent of the north kelp line. Novices would be pushed out from the shelter of Pt La Jolla out to more open water.

- The existing Scripps MPA boundaries are well known. The new bouys are well maintained and not prone to drifting. Boundary signs with maps are numerous.

- The bait-only SMCA proposed for the pier and north is not needed to meet science guidelines. The habitats that would be protected are represented elsewhere in the study region. It would have a big impact on the local surf-casting community, who would have virtually no fishable sandy beaches the length of La Jolla.

- South La Jolla is critically important to local commercial lobster and urchin and to the sportboat landings in Mission Bay. Remember, in years the current runs predominately uphill, south La Jolla grows in importance to us too. Besides, north Pt Loma is more suitable as it offers the most persistent kelp forest in Southern California. When there's no kelp in LJ, its still hanging on at north Pt Loma. The economic and access hits are much lighter.

These should get you going.

put me on the roll call.

Paul,
Thanks for all your hard work in this. Myself included, there are lots of guys on this board that aren't necessarily from SD. I'm assuming that its ok for us to send the letter to the SD politicians, or is it more effective for us to write the letter to the politicians closer to our home turf? (OC for me) I saw this on a few other boards, for different areas. I know lots of guys check several of the boards. Again, if we can write a letter about each specific area, and send them to the repective politicians, should we do that as well? Also, in regard to the letter we send to you for the BRTF, do you want a hard copy? If yes, where can we send it? If not, what e-mail can we send it to?

Sorry for all the questions. Again, thanks for all your work:you_rock:

Please start with a letter addressed to the MLPA Blue Ribbon Task Force. Select an area near your home in the cross-hairs and comment. Those would be La Jolla, Pt Dume at Malibu, and Long Pt at Catalina. Send it to me via PM or PM me and I'll give you my email address.

Next, think about writing a beach city that will lose $$$ if a closure comes to call. Here's a list of the cities that have already taken a position. You don't need to target them unless you want to hold their feet to the fire.

Ok people, send your Blue Ribbon Task Force letters to MLPAComments@resources.ca.gov, Subject line "South Coast comment for BRTF."

Put the hammer down. A pro-closure RSG member just bragged on the MLPA listserv how 1000s and 1000s of letter support proposal 3. Send your letters, then get your friends and co-workers into the game.

DESTROYER 10-29-2009 12:31 PM

Letter Sent! Put me on the list!:cheers1:

Holy Mackerel 10-29-2009 12:53 PM

This is easy guys, you can do it at work! Get your friends and Co-workers involved!

roosta 10-29-2009 12:57 PM

Done! You can add me to the list!

Spearos are cranking up.

http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=94958

If a spearo/kayaker can send 6 pro-group 2 emails (one for each region), and get your girlfriend/wife/kids to do the same, we can be a very powerful voice.

1 kayaker X 6 = 6 emails

1 kayaker + wife +2 kids (all kayakfishing of course) X 6 emails = 24 emails.

get us 100 such families:

100 X 24 emails = 2400 emails!!!

100 dedicated kayakers/spearos getting their families/friends involved will tip the balance. The rest is icing on the cake.

let's lower the hammer ladies and gents. Bring 'er home.

Let's do it guys.

Guys, please cc or bcc Kayaker4prop2@gmail.com

I know it sounds big brotherish, but these comments are public comments to the BRTF. they will be made public anyways. This is so we can get an idea of how many people are commenting, and more important so we know who has commented. We need to hold each other accountable here.

Saying you sent in a letter is way different than actually doing it.
