Surf was real fun yesterday morning. I launched around 5am and thought I had just timed it really well because I didn't even get splashed... then the dark wall of water started to form up and broke on top of me, soaking me from head to toe. That's the closest I've ever come to not making it out from the shores. Luckily, the rest of the waves for that set didn't break quite as far out as the first.

Anyway, I went straight out and trolled a sabiki (thanks for the tip, Andy) and found one greenie and three spanish pretty quickly. I flylined the greenie and put a few ounces on one of the spanish. At about 6:30 the greenie gets hammered, and after a minute of getting towed towards the kelp, I started to fear that I wasn't going to be able to stop whatever this was so I tightened the drag some. A minute later I was directly over it, winching it up without any problem. I started to think it was a big WSB, but it turned out to be a decent yellowtail.

I wouldn't mind getting drenched if I could be promised a fish like that. Nice going.

Good Work!

I'm looking forward to catching bait on the sabiki troll. I've been paddling to the pier too often.

Esdees, what kind of kayak do you have? Looks like a Hobie Quest? I have a Quest, just got it. How do you like yours?

esdees 05-09-2007 11:53 AM

Yeah, it's a quest. It has worked well for me. I wish the front hatch was a little longer for getting rods in and out on the really bad surf days. I haven't had any desire to modify mine at all (comes with two molded in rod holders and I like the layout of the cockpit), so the lack of flat spots to mount stuff hasn't bothered me too much. It's a little short so it doesn't track very well, but it turns quite quickly when you want it to. It's light enough to carry short distances, even down stairs by yourself if necessary.

If yours has screws holding the seat in (mine did), you might want to have those replaced with something stronger. The guys at OEX on Rosecrans can help you out with that and it should only take a few minutes if they're not busy.
