La Jolla Swimmer

who has any information of the guy that had to be rescued but the CG at La Jolla today. I read he had a dry suit on with an emergency beacon that went off when he went in the drink. He was rescued and I guess okay but I haven't seen anything else on it.

I'm wondering what happened too........

How did he separate from his kayak was he fishing ?

I don't know anything except his beacon notified the CG station in San Francisco and they notified San Diego. I thought someone on here would know more.

FYI...it wasn't me, lol. Respect the ocean.

Thanks, it sure makes me rethink my habit of going fishing by myself all of the time. I don't do it as much as I did when I was younger but I still do occasionally. Does he look like one of the BWE guys?

hook1fred 01-27-2017 08:47 AM

Wow that's nuts. I know I don't have the equipment that he had. Outside if my VHF and PFD. He had a dry suit and a rescue beacon, that's prepared, outside of fishing alone of course

Its not safe to fish La Jolla without an EPIRB, just sayin.

What would be an adequate PLB to have for kayakers?
Any recommendations for brand, model, price?

Gotta say been fishing La Jolla from a yak since 2006 never felt unsafe. Always have my pfd and vhf. Sure a EPIRB is a great safety measure but I don't feel its not safe to be out there without one, just sayin

chris138 01-27-2017 12:34 PM

Im kidding, I don't have EBIRB... but my VHF does have DSC/GPS distress. Standard Horizon HX870.

Baja_Traveler 01-27-2017 01:26 PM

I'd rather have a SPOT than an EPIRB - alot more useful for situations outside of Kayaking...

Homeboy forgot his dog paddling skills

Which model?

Does this broadcast on an emergency channel, or do you need the app that comes with it to follow the transmitter on Google Maps?

Is it waterproof?

I had the same thoughts. I'm thinking hypothermia is the greatest danger. Also makes me think of leashing myself to my yak if I'm out alone.

Personally that sounds more dangerous than safe.

I carry the inReach beacon for all my sports...kayakfishing, boating, rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, hiking, off roading, dirt biking, etc...It will also text message.
At the time it was much better than the SPOT. I have had it 3-4 years now.

MITCHELL 01-28-2017 05:16 PM

Wish I new the details on what.....

Happen were....maybe rough condition, flipped wind and current pushed his kayak faster than he could swim.

fishnfoool 01-28-2017 05:24 PM

Swim fins might be something to invest in.
