The REEL Ironman

The real "Ironman" will be decided in 2006. It won't be decided by the biggest YT caught or even how many. It will be more like a scavenger hunt. Here is a list of all the inshore fishes that I have caught on the iron. The person who catches the most of the fish on the list will be this year's IRONMAN. Fish do not have to be in season or of legal size, just snap the picture in the water at boatside, at arms length, on deck, or have someone take the picture, just make sure the jig is in the mouth.

greenback mackerel
spanish mackerel
smelt
lizardfish
sand dab
rockfish
cabezon
treefish
lingcod
midshipman
sarcastic fringehead
surf perch
yellowfin croaker
spotfin croaker
sheephead
halibut
spotted bay bass
sandbass
calico bass
bonito
barracuda
yellowtail
white seabass
black seabass
senorita
tomcod
blacksmith
halfmoon
shark, or ray
wild card

Traditional irons only, flat on one side, rounded on the other. No eyes or realistic finishes, old school.

Just get a picture of the iron in the fish's kisser. No entry fee, you are in when you post your first picture. Maybe we will come up with a prize.......maybe not :D

Dennis, I am gonna add a wild card, one per person for those oddities. That is pretty cool. I pulled up a starfish once :D

Now if the judges will confirm that it is hooked in the area of the mouth :D

tylerdurden 03-25-2006 11:31 AM

It isn't a yt but I gotta start somewhere.

Awesome. Right in the mouth too (or close enough to whatever is the mouth on one of those). The wildcard is turning out to be the most interesting part of this.

tylerdurden 04-22-2006 12:11 PM

Damn, I forgot to take the pic of the sea cucumber I snagged last Tuesday with the jig. That was a first for me. Some funny stuff is coming up on those heavy irons.

steveooo 04-22-2006 01:12 PM

Some people say it is the action or the color of the jig. I say it is the low price on the sticker.

yo-yo ing in the bay is the only effective was to catch the elusive giant man-eating rocket powered bay snail. I know it is technical, but when targeting this species, it is the only way to go.

-well actually, I had every intention of launching for La Jolla that morning, but after a 1/2 hour of watching some pretty wicked waves crash down on the beach, I chickened out! I then headed to the bay rather than come home and mow the lawn. I was i'll equiped for the bay, and dying to get my new jig wet that I bought from the Fred Hall show the weekend before. Ya do what ya gotta do!

I think this is a Johnny bass (olive rockfish). Does that count as rockfish or is it separate. First on I've caught on a hook, snagged plenty in the hoops.

I have no idea. These rockfish confuse the heck out of me. What would distinguish the two (just color?).

Ya we are just doing one general "rockfish", too many varieties.

nmbrinkman 04-30-2006 04:00 PM

It may actually be a copper...determine for yourselves.

How did I forget that one. I just added it to the list. :D

I have never caught one of those.
