Newport Local Rockies.

Went out Sunday morning with a couple of buddies and met William Novotny & Jay Yew at the launch/water.

Williams group and mines split our ways to fish our own honey holes in search of some feesh.

Launched by 630, and got to the grounds by 7am.

Found some smaller schools, but no biters for a good hour or so till a huge pod of Porpoises came cruising by. Awesome site to see. (Picture does no justice. There were literally hundreds of them.)

Buddy David caught 6 Reds & a Sculpin.

Friend Bryan took home 6 Reds & 2 Chuckles.

And I limited out with 7 Reds, 1 Barber Pole, & 2 Chuckles.

Good meeting you out there Avril, looks like you guys did really well out there too!!

FishNinjaY 04-14-2014 04:10 PM

nice meeting up with you guys yesterday.. we got a late start, and just caught the dolphin highway passing thru. Pretty amazing.

Only 2 hours, and I couldn't figure out my FF. In the harbor, it was reading reasonable depths, like 24-27ft.. but out in the rockfish areas, it would just display between 0.0 and 3.4 ??? The split screen looked reasonable, and sometimes I thought I was drifting over fish, but unsure. Luckily, Arvil was on the fish and sticking close to him, my son was able to pull in a nice sized copper on the double dropper loop.

Glad you guys made it out there. I tried my best to help keep you and your son on the fish. Get that FF figured out, and lets do it again.

And I get the award for Best Video Editing! :cheers1:

the backstory..

I don't even know what that small bait fish is.. or where it came from. I suspect the copper rockfish in one of it's convulsing fits might have puked it out (gross, right?).. my son rinsed it off and was inspecting it.

I said, "I bet you won't eat that", and he says, "what will you give me if I do".. I say, "nothing, but I'll video it, and mom will FREAK OUT"

He says, "uhmm... do I have to actually eat it?".. and we're ON.

Nice seeing all you guys out there. I agree with Will, next time have that many people out there from BWE, we should start a jackpot. We were running late so I did not have time to introduce myself.

The pod of dolphins was amazing!

socal_matt 04-14-2014 08:10 PM

Nice job Arvil! Way to kill'em out there.

AirborneYak 04-14-2014 08:20 PM

You were not alone my friend :ack2:

My buddy and I were out there Sunday too. We were both in Hobie Revo 13's(His is yellow and mine is Ivory Dune)Each ended with a decent stringer of reds and chuckle heads. Also encountered all the dolphins...really cool. Counted about 17 other yaks in the same area. Said hi to a few, all seemed to be nice guys. Been fishing out of Newport for close to ten years now. I used to get sea sick every time I ventured outside the harbor. A few years ago, I discovered a "cure" that's been working 100% of the time for me. Basically stay hydrated (with water) ;) the day before; and more importantly, take 1 or 2 "Less Drowsy Dramamine" pills before bed. "Bonine" never worked for me but I heard everybody reacts differently to each.

Looks awesome. By the way, I'm new to Newport Beach, where do you launch the yak? It looks a nice area to launch your yak.

Fishin' Magician 04-15-2014 04:23 PM

What were you guys using out there? Live bait, cut bait, soft plastic swimbaits, jerk baits, jigs, Gulp baits, bucktails, all of the above? What works best for you guys?

I was using strip squid. it was working pretty well. I think the majority of everyone was using squid.

We launch at kids beach, search previous threads for exact location or use google maps. Be sure if its your first time be sure you go with someone who knows where they are going. Makes life easier .....
