Gear tracks

Well after 18 months of trolling this site and waiting for the right timing, I finally pulled the trigger on a Malibu stealth 12 yesterday at the OEX parking lot sale.

After using a float tube in the harbors since I moved here, this is a big upgrade. First step is to get some tracks put on, but after looking through here, Amazon, and a few other sites I realized I needed a little guidance.

Any major differences in brands? Scotty, RAM, or yakattack. If I chose a rail system, am I then locked in to only using that brands products or are the tracks universal?

I do about 80 to 90 % fly fishing so having the right rod holders is a necessity. It looks like both RAM and Scotty have specific fly rod holders, but I couldn't find anything for yakattack.

Any suggestions on best brands? etc.

Also I will be fishing mostly out of Oxnard and Malibu, hopefully I will get to know some of you guys in the near future!

Most of them are compatible. I have a Scotty Orca mounted on a Yakattack mighty mount which is mounted onto a Yakattack geartrac.

Check with Andy (iceman) at OEX. He can tell you the best way to set it up. Does awesome work and OEX does sponsor this site.

those flys are huge. Back in the day when I fished for trout I tied flies for a few shops around here. The biggest I tied were on 18 hooks and I had lots of calls for 24 or 26 sized dries. I can't even see a 26 fly any more. So you guys school me some. What sized rods and reels are you using, sinking lines or lead heads? Bring me back into the fold.

Geartracs are the most universal. All the track manufacturers are pretty much compatible with most track accessories. YakAttack seems to have the best selection in mounting options.

You can always buy adapters for any rod holder in the market to adapt to the track system, just make sure you have the proper heavy duty track and backing (washers/nuts, fullback, etc).

When its time to get the flyrod holder, get the Scotty. I tried the RAM holder and really didn't like it. If you don't clip the RAM shut, the rod falls out. For the Scotty, you just lay the rod in there and it will stay, and then there's a strap for extra security.
