Wow nice!! Conditions have been shitty past noon but that's looks so flat. What time were you out?

GregAndrew 09-27-2014 05:56 PM

Congrats. You have to be the luckiest man alive to be going home with that Halibut.

Why lucky and dangerous guys? Cause it didn't go berserk?

Teambcw 09-27-2014 07:28 PM

Good job!

Nice fish! Glad it worked out the way it did! Time for some game clips.

I wonder how many people who ride a cattle boat, and see a yacker catch a 35# halibut, give it up and go visit their local yack dealer and buy a boat?

TekkaYaker 09-27-2014 09:22 PM

blood in the water

Congrats on an awesome day on the water! I'd be careful dangling feet in the water with a kayak full of blood though.. Ya never know what is waiting below!

Nice going man!

I must have missed the lucky and dangerous part...?

YakDout 09-28-2014 08:38 AM

You stoned that halibut with the gaff shot. Nice placement. And you're telling me la jolla isn't the only place to catch a yellowtail???

bubblehide 09-28-2014 11:44 AM

Sweet!

With the hurricane sitting off Baja, expected to be there for a while, just pumping the warm water up the coast, it's bound to only get better. Jeez, what an epic year!

Thanks guys for the views. One of those magical days, right conditions, little swell, no wind and right kind below the boat.

For the guys that mentioned safety as a concern. Best practices on the water, and precautions can always be improved. Personnal awareness is the biggest asset while managing gear and heavier game fish. I actually reviewed the video several times and did see a few things I could have done differently, but we have all been there, getting caught up in the moment. Lucky that halibut didn't go hay-wire, or as mentioned, could have been a unsafe move.

All in all, it's the risks we take for the shot, picture or experience of landing that fish we have been looking for. For me, I try to make them calculated risks, in this case well worth it!

First off, awesome catch and great video. Thank you for the report.

Second, I had a close encounter with a GW at County Line last year on the 4th of July. I gaffed a 35 lb sea bass in Deep Hole and let it bleed out over the side of the yak. About 3 hours later a 15' or more GW popped up behind a yaker that was about 30' away from me (down current). Thing goes into overdrive and circles the guy 3 or 4 times, scaring the hell out of him, turns my way and goes down. I thought I was next in line but it never came up again. Felt pretty bad for the guy who got circled since I was the one chumming...Fun day on the water. LOL...I'll be out there this weekend! haha

I only bleed the fish before I make it back to land and I don't like to dangle my fish in the water.

People bleed their fish in the middle of the ocean, and dangle their catch in the water. I don't want any attention from the sharkies so I more careful. But WAter is the right temperature and Malibu is going off along with Santamonica. Thanks for sharing. I try to put my fish inside my kayak just so I don't leave a trail of blood.
