Lost Rods

on the off chance they didn't end up in the canyon
(not sure since I didn't have my transducer down)

rolled it just inside the white buoys on my return at 3ish
3 rods not clipped in
(dunno why since I always clip em when returning typically, tired and lazy I guess)

custom Calstar with a triton 20/40
G-loomis with a Calcutta
(forgot brand casting rod with nat cork handle) with a new Avet

thanks to the guy who helped me roll it back over
(and gather a few things)
I was on the wrong side of the yak with my first attempt

didn't think to get a gps cord at the time
grrr

That's heartbreaking! I have lost items to the fish gods before as well and it is usually followed by some awesome fishing Karma. I hope yours comes soon!

How'd you mannage to roll in open water?

octico 07-04-2015 10:30 AM

Bummer ....

This dive report was posted on a diving forum this morning, Saturday, July 4th. If you really lost three poles somewhere with swimming range of the Marine Room in about 55' of water (someone on a kayak?), contact him.

Full post :

As previous post mentioned, don't bother with the shores unless you arrived very early.. That said we decided to try the marine room at 7am this morning. Parking was good and still manageable around here. We entered at low tide, a few 3' waves with no power on the way in. Kicked out and dropped at 25'. Vis there and to the edge of the canyon was cloudy 20' min temp 68.X

I found 3 fishing poles at 55' a real pain to drag back but I have them, describe and it is yours.

Creatures: octopus, crabs, and not much else.

Leisurely kick back as the tide was coming in

Have a great 4th of July & safe diving.

^^^^^^
How cool is that, looks like you'll get them back.:luxhello:

radastaff 07-04-2015 11:48 AM

ew wow
gonna look into that
thanks and fingers crossed

how I rolled...

coming in
There was some chop and slop with the following seas,
so I was zig sagging to avoid back swamping.
while zigging I started to track to the left until I got perpendicular to the swell.
To correct I dug in hard to the right, leaned a bit and at almost the same time got hit with a nice choppy wave.
I tried to correct by leaning to the other side but I was past the point of no return,
and in a went.
I had to laugh at the time
because it sure felt comical.

thanks,
me too

learned a few things...

always leash /clip your stuff if its not in your hands(I thought I knew this but I guess I forgot and or got complacent), or have a floaty attached

dont zig zag with following seas

be careful near the canyon

offers of help are greatly appreciated even if I think I can manage by myself
(because sometimes I cant), my buddies were already on the beach at the time

im prob gonna rig up a step/loop to hang from my handles
to be better able to get the yak back over when on the opposite side of the yak from the oncoming swell

the fishing/diving community Is fricken awesome
and
my pride almost kept me from posting this
which is foolish(the pride part)

THANKS MUCHO

Hope you get em back. You got to the beach just before me and another kayaker told me about your misfortune as you were loading up. The chop just didn't ease up, so I jumped out in waist deep water and walked it in. Too many people in the beach to try to avoid also.

Radastaff,
I might have the GPS coordinates (sorry I didn't think input a marker but since I did a few circles should be easy to pin point) will check when I get home and see if its still on there. Think you were in 57ft of water.

ok cool
will be waiting to here from Ofer
that depth sounds like how deep he was diving
so that's a major positive

hoping I don't need to employ Gregs talents

I did the same thing when I came in
very crowded

and no fish for me either
did see a few landed though
so that was cool

like a crazy river past the point
current was kicking

3 fishing poles with reels found yesterday off Marine Room

Yesterday early morning I dove the Marine Room, ended up at 55' on the slope where I found a fishing pole, and another and another...yes, 3 poles, all quite long and a pain to carry back but I figured a poor fisherman on a kayak probably tipped over. One is a custom made, "Taylor made for Brad Perry". If you are Brad or you know him, contact me with the details, pole type, length, reel, colors etc.
the poles were rinsed off and waiting to go home.
