Tuna are close - some info

Went out on Thursday to see what was going on offshore of LJ. Launched at 6:30 and did not see/catch bait. Inshore was really dead. Decided to venture offshore, it was so flat and no swell so what the heck. Went out to the NW corner and just kept going. It gets deep fast! At about the 6mi. mark, in about 900' of water I started seeing birds and bait moving around pretty fast. I kept going west and got into lots of bird schools and foaming BFT. Second bird school I got to I hooked up started to grind on it and a few head shakes and it popped off. For the next 2 hours I was chasing bird schools and boiling BFT. Small ones, medium ones and the big ones that people have been talking about. I was able to come up really close on them and get perfect Iron shots but no other takers. It was unreal. The BFT were corralling anchovies and coming through boiling and tearing up the bait. It was unreal. The deepest water I was was in was at about 1280'. There were a lot of anchovies out there and I saw lots of fish and marks down to about 150'. I came to one bird school and they had the anchovies balled up and these massive gorillas came through and were just making laps on the bait crashing jumping and boiling. I crept up and fired on them, nothing, I wish I had macs. I don't think I have ever seen Tuna go off like this, not on a kayak that is for sure. Pretty crazy to have 4-5' Tuna jump across your bow at about 40' away at eye level. Had to turn and burn back to the launch at 1:00 pm. Took about 2 1/2 hours to get back in.

They are close, make bait, spend the entire day out there and you might just bag one. Bring big gear, there are big fish out there - be prepared. It is a big ocean. I was out there all alone, no boats, no yaks, I felt pretty small out there. The conditions were perfect. No swell or wind, light overcast.

Be safe.

Matt

Chuck, cedar plug and repalas deep on the troll should load you up with that silent fish killing machine of yours. Tight lines.

Good on you for getting out there! Too bad there weren't more takers but how sick was it watching them all day from your KAYAK! Epic!

Dannowar 06-20-2015 12:16 PM

romspacenut 06-20-2015 02:51 PM

It's going to happen for the kayakers this year for sure.

YakDout 06-20-2015 03:53 PM

Awesome post, thank you. I am definitely going to take a stab at the offshore fish this season. Maybe a couple times. Anyone with a PB want to mothership it? haha:captain:

I wouldn't mind doing it with a few guys, just not comfortable enough to do it by myself in case something goes wrong. Let me know when your planning on heading out.

That's pretty cool that you hooked one. Getting them to bite has been the problem for most... Oh and then getting them up. :)

chuckt 06-20-2015 08:45 PM

I am sure you will see the half day sport boat catching them if the tunas are this close and biting. I remembered catching YFT on 1/2 day boat out of newport last el nino.

easyday 06-21-2015 12:57 AM

I would love to join....I have Wednesday off.

With my age & back injury I'm no longer in any kind of condition to try, but if they get closer I'm currently doing some cycle training to get my heart/physical condition up to a decent level. I'm thinking it's only June and with the conditions this crazy it reminds me of the El Niño of '84-5 and if anyone is old enough to remember that was one for the record books (at least for the local boats)!
There were schooling :yt: all over the Santa Monica Bay! A 10# bonito was a jr. 15#'ers were common. A run of albacore (avg. 35+# with some weighing up to 60#'s were running through the Catalina Channel in November). Half day boats from MDR, Redondo, 22nd St., Ports 'O' Call & Long Beach were trolling the channel until Christmas. It was an amazing year!
I'm praying that it gets that good!

I'm game to do this.. Can do weekdays

kjsdad619 06-22-2015 10:47 AM

Let me know if are heading way out again!

Matt, let me know if you are going to do that again. I'd like to tag along and venture out. I have yet to catch a YFT. The adventure starts when shit goes wrong..but it's always better when you have company!:reel:
