3 trips...40 plus hours OTW...two all-nighters...one bite

50.2# WSB :D

Shimano Terramar Rod and Daiwa SL20SH...a GREAT battle! Had to break off kelp three times and thought I lost the fish each time.
Stuck around hoping for another :D or morning tails...for a zip...BUT my buddy on his boat gets a triple hook-up and passes a rod over to me. That counts, right? :sifone:

Night time conditions were sucky 8 mph winds, choppy, chilly, stupid current went opposite the wind...:the_finger:
Six blisters including both butt cheeks, achilles and knees. Note to self when I get home: check inside waders for sand paper.:the_finger:
Accidently snagged a dolphin in the dark on a circle hook  which proceeded to snapped the tip of my Cal Star rod, not a fun experience... :the_finger:
One berserk snagged seal which luckily broke off...:the_finger:

Another note to self...stow mirage drive plug in case a heavy lap load requires paddling in...

TheBentRod 10-07-2013 08:05 AM

Counts somewhat if you get to eat it.

Nice to have a ride in. Congrats on the WSB.

A tow is NEVER a bad thing...in this case it was AWESOME!!!

GregAndrew 10-07-2013 08:54 AM

Jim, you bring a whole new meaning to "buns of steel". Congrats on the fish, you earned them.

Reel Anxious 10-07-2013 09:01 AM

WSB

With that kind of effort, and diaper rash to boot, you deserve that catch. What a beauty. :notworthy: :wsb:

Smthtnnr 10-07-2013 09:06 AM

That's a well deserved catch. Those are the beset, knowing hard work pays off. Confgrats!

makobob 10-07-2013 10:46 AM

And the beat goes on, and on. So that was the rest of the story. Congratulations, awesome fish.

wiredantz 10-07-2013 11:12 AM

Jim,

You are bad ass.

This is the face of someone who's proud of what he has between his legs

Aaron&Julie 10-07-2013 12:55 PM

Nice couple of fish you caught there. Congrats. When was this, recently?

Linglifter 10-07-2013 01:09 PM

Battle Details

WOW...that's a great catch! Thanks for the fishing report. What size line (rating) and how much drag did you need to land that 50lb fish?

roby 10-07-2013 06:31 PM

I'm not sure if night time fishing has been good to you or not by your experiences aside from hooking and landing that beast.

Jim is all heart....

Except for the part where he gets towed-in and gets a hand-off....

lowprofile 10-07-2013 06:45 PM

you know what i'd say...

but this time.. Nice one!:you_rock:

StinkyMatt 10-07-2013 06:49 PM

If you don't know Jim you need to know one thing about him....

Jim is a crack head! Yup.....I said it, he is a crack snorting vain shootin up crack head.

The guy goes out for an all nighter one night

Night two he pulls about 16 or 17 hours straight......

He goes home for a quick shower and grabs new batteries for his kayak and is back on the water welcoming me join him to fish a third night session in a row.

Crack ........it's the only way in the world he can do this!

Jim, you are an animal. 50 pounder.

:cheers1:

kobra 10-07-2013 06:58 PM

Well earned beauty Jim. :luxhello:

lamb 10-07-2013 07:31 PM

Jim, you're the trooper :cheers1:
I don't know how you can pull those over-nighters on the kayak. That really takes some serious endurance and skill. Stoked to see you're getting rewards!!!

Any thread that inspires Ken to say something or Danimal to chip in in astonishment... - I salute! :cheers1:

Wouldn't you like one of those... :D

I KNOW I WOULD!!! :D

Baaaah... :cheers1:

You got that right Adi. Glad to see Kenny is still around.

easyday 10-08-2013 08:32 AM

Awesome catch Jim, there is a reason you are always landing beasts.

blitzburgh 10-08-2013 11:39 AM

Da-yumm!

Deamon 10-08-2013 04:58 PM

I appreciate the replies. I jumped into this inshore yak fishing stuff kind of late three years ago (I'm 52). I know I'll only be able to bang it out this way for a couple more years so right now its balls to the wall trying to earn personal bests and fresh photos (check out my BWE photo album!). Someday I'll flip my nose at it saying..."I fished with some of the best dudes and had a great time doing it while I could...NO REGRETS!".

There were a few questions asked...
-Yes, caught a few days ago. 11pm fish...I use 65# braid and 40# flouro. It's almost overkill for WSB but every once in a while there's a larger fish and/or kelp to deal with.
-With squid, I use either a 5/0 or 7/0 wire circle hook (hasn't let me down yet!). As my rod sits in the holder, the drag is unusually loose to allow something powerful...like a seal or dolphin to just go on with their bad self without flipping me over (happened to me earlier this summer). I'm still not used to a loose drag but the circle hook just does its thing.

Brotha Roby...dude, come on.

Awesome!!! Love the dedication, it's something I would do. It's a hell of a catch, I've never gotten a WSB. Mind exporting some to Korea?

BTW... I ended up with some of that heat rash in my hobie the other day after it was raining and I was pedalling in the rain/wet clothing all day. Took like 4 days to heal, was pretty bad. Couldn't walk straight. What's the best cure for that.

Gold bong body powder will burn at first but it helps heal it. Used the crap out of that stuff in Afghanistan

MrPatrick 10-08-2013 09:32 PM

Gold Bong!?!?!?
Is that the real reason for your Easy Day
Moniker?

easyday 10-08-2013 09:52 PM

Haha wow I hate typing on my phone....GOLD BOND:D

TJones 10-09-2013 06:16 AM

congrats

i bought a super light pair of thermals from sport chalet ( the see through kind ). i even wear them in summer to wick away moisture . without them on , the waders on top of skin is like wearing a glad bag . when i am done and strip down the waders , i am completely dry . i don't have the problem with the rash anymore . apologies for diverting the spot light . :cheers1:

philr21 10-09-2013 06:05 PM

Good info, thanks.

That pic of the two fish between your legs is awesome for sure....

Whizz Bang 10-11-2013 06:31 PM

Nicely Done!

3 Trips. One tow in. One big WSB....in October, well done. Very well done. I have fished many nights out there alone. They do occasionally pay off, they more often give you time to speculate on your place in this life, where you are at, where you want to go, and what you are. I respect anyone that does it. Period.

post script: asking stinky matt if he wanted to roll out with you, sounds alot like you having fun, and looking forward to yet another solo op. I do that too, to the same kind of guys.

Well done.
