Solo skiff offshore trip

We have roughly 6-10 folks looking to smash out to the N.9bank in search of local tuna. So far plan is to launch from vacation isle boat launch (avoid private boaters traffic at the small ass dock in Dana landing) by first light 5:30 on Sat 17th. We have a safety boat cruising along too. Weather looks great until 11 where winds will pick up to 9-10mph then taper down towards later afternoon.

More to come!! FB page Socal Solo Skiff has thread going.

:cheers1:

I'm interested in joining up. What is the address of the launch point?

I'll be ready. Was out looking yesterday further north, but it was a weird day and even though I had great bait and trolled the Nomad DTX a lot, there was no signs of life. Especially bird life. Nice day on the water still and the Solo Skiff is awesome out there, even when the wind picks up, you can still fly over the chop. My big catch was this long piece of rope and 3 Mylar balloons, the rope had been in the water some time. It had a bunch of pincher bug looking animals and tiny crabs living on it. I was glad I got it out before some whale or Dolphin got wrapped up in it. I HATE MYLAR! The Solo Skiff is AWESOME!

I live in Cardiff and there are 30+ boats at night--every night for the last week. Do what ever you can to be visible. According to WON most fish are being caught on Colt Snipers and similar jigs. Good Luck!!

Pocoloco 07-15-2021 09:53 AM

kayaks? No gas, just human power.:paddleersmilie:
I know what a skiff or boat can do but what about kayaks.
I like reading about kayak adventures.

AlwaysFishing 07-15-2021 12:31 PM

I'll be there.

My buddy tried those Ama's and they really slowed him down because they drag.

The key is to get on plane, the solo will literally skip across the swells and chop, you may get a little wet, but that's expected on these solos.

I gotta plan for the worse. Dont like the feeling of clinching my buttocks tighter than fresh meat at San Quentin for an extended period when mother nature gets angry but that's just my nervous nature.

NICKWORN 07-16-2021 10:23 AM

His were in the back though

Never saw them in the front, could work.

Just for an update, a bunch of us went out and gave it a try for Local Tuna. As is often the case, with fishing, the fish don't care what plans you make. It was, as most times, still a great day on the water. It was great to have company and see the Solo Skiffs out so far, cover so much water, have so much fun all the while spending less than a Craft 6 pack of beer. The Tuna, will come and the FUN, will NEVER STOP.

Rough fishing out there, anyone with a 14’ or bigger skiff was at the 9 Saturday. I think we ended out past the fleet up by Torrey Pines, was roughly a 60mile round trip. Definitely will be back out there a lot this summer! Skiff handles offshore like a cloud.

Buddy hoped in on a paddy a speared a 15lb YT, but that was all. Not a ton of life, foamers would pop up then sink as any boat would approach, charter boats seemed to pick em off here and there with a shit ton of chum.

lbsurf2ca 07-19-2021 09:21 AM

The volume of fish out at the top of the north nine was incredible Saturday. We were out on a 17 skiff and opted to do a late run knowing everything and everyone would be out Saturday. Not to our surprise the boat launch was filled with everyone coming in at 4pm. Most people we talked to didn’t have problems finding fish but just not able to get a bite. We hooked and landed at 65lbs on the popper at sunset which took us into the dark. Epic foamers.

It was a lot of our first offshore trip so afternoon action wasn't in the plan, but you had the right idea. The crowds were insane and it seemed everyone wanted to run right up on the schools, but as soon as anyone got to close they sank with a quickness.

I had a shot at one really large foamer, but on my second cast a PB rolled up right on top of them, SMH, oh well it was still a good confidence builder for many trips ahead.

Bring on the DODO and YF...

FISH11 07-19-2021 11:37 AM

I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow launching from La Jolla.

GTboosted 07-19-2021 11:50 AM

What speeds are guys you hitting in those SOLOs?

FISH11 07-19-2021 12:20 PM

It mostly depends on water surface conditions. The flatter it is the slower you go. Flat flat water about 10.5-11.5 mph, on slight wind ripples it's usually the fastest 13.5-15.5 mph, on following seas if on the right angle and it's virtually surfing, I've had it hit 17.8 mph. At that speed the steering is very touchy and you have to pay much more attention to the waters in front, from the sides and catching up from behind. It is a total blast. Most of the time when we were going fast it was around 12.5-13.5 mph. Trolling the Nomad was 5.0-6.5 mph. P.S. What's up Beto, I still have my 2016 Malibu X Factor I bought from you.

Hey Mark,

That's pretty fast. I got tired of the range of the kayak so I sold my Hobie. But I refuse to pay covid prices on boats so I ordered a new small inflatable and 6hp mercury to hold me off for a bit. Later I can take the inflatable to the Eastern Sierras in my little camping trailer.

Anyway, I figured it will be a bit too fast to go out with kayaks but maybe to slow with Solo's. I guess I will see how it performs when it arrives next month.

For the price I should have kept one of those Malibu kayaks. Not sure I want to surf launch with an outboard in LA County :o

FISH11 07-19-2021 04:17 PM

Compared to kayaks it's a whole different ball game. Besides the speed to cover water faster or further, the big advantage is not having to fight the wind and current. No more spending hours to get back from 3.5 miles out down current and wind and your GPS says your forward speed is 0.5-1.2 mph, even on a Hobie were you normally could do 3.5-4.3 mph (been there). Sometimes you might not be able to go full speed through the chop and need to slow down so as not to get so wet, but then you are still going 8.5-9.6 mph. It makes it great to get back in minutes not hours. I call that, SAFETY. I also have friends that have Scout inflatables with the 6 or 8 HP outboard and they get out there also.

AlwaysFishing 07-20-2021 05:23 AM

I have not pushed the Solo Skiff to its full potential until this past weekend, going out with Mark, Nick and other owners. It is safer to go faster because you would ride on top of the swells and chops. It's a little nerve racking at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad. If you go slow, you get pushed around by the swells and chops, like you would in a kayak.
Here is my video of the trip.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll start a new one when I get my gear in.

Just another update. Saturday a bunch of us Solo Skiff owner's (So. Cal. Solo Skiff Owner Club) 10 guys headed out for the N. 9 Mile Bank area. It was the first organized of shore trip asides from rock fishing, lobstering, etc. The pack of Solos chased Tuna like all the hundreds off boats that day, few landed any. On Tuesday the 20 th, I thought the Solo is all loaded I could launch from La Jolla and have a shorter distance. What started as to check how close, ended up I went to the same spots. Unlike Saturday there were hardly any birds, no foamers or breaching tuna. Wind did not pick up as forecast and the sun burned off the haze and made it a beautiful day. Just no a good fishing day. It opened up so much more than I though would be possible. AMAZING SOLO SKIFF!

off-shore trips

After looking at my Lowrance 7TI and checking the trails from the off shore trips on 7-13,7-17 and 7-20, all to areas on the north end of the 9 mile bank and La Jolla Canyon Weather Buoy. I took a screen picture showing the 3 routes and they totaled 132 Nautical Miles on the Solo Skiff and it's amazing to me to look at that chart with the trails over so much space and know that was on my Solo Skiff on 3 trips. One launching from Mission Bay and two from La Jolla Shores. I find that amazing!
